Good Samaritan Clinic is a faith-based, volunteer-driven ministry of care, serving uninsured and low-income adults across the Midlands of South Carolina. This year, the clinic celebrates 25 years of walking alongside the community—offering healing, hope, and restoration to those who might otherwise go without care. With four clinic locations, each rooted in compassion and dignity, Good Samaritan Clinic continues to meet people where they are and remind them they are not forgotten.
At the heart of this work are Community Health Workers (CHWs), who journey closely with each patient—offering not only guidance through the healthcare system, but also encouragement, connection, and trust. They help remove barriers like language, transportation, and access to care, ensuring that patients feel seen, supported, and never alone. For women, including those who are pregnant, this care is especially meaningful—surrounding them with a network of support that nurtures both mother and child.
There is so much excitement in this season of growth. Through a Duke Endowment grant—awarded in partnership with Lexington Health, United Way of the Midlands, WellPartners, and the Free Medical Clinic—Good Samaritan Clinic is helping lead the way in strengthening the Community Health Worker workforce across the region. Building on a long history of investing in the CHW model, the clinic recently welcomed a part-time AmeriCorps CHW and celebrated the promotion of bilingual CHW Laura Slabon to a full-time role after four years of faithful service.
At the clinic’s 25th anniversary celebration, the room was filled with CHWs from across partner organizations—an inspiring reminder of how deeply connected this work is. Laura herself was part of one of the very first PASOs CHW training cohorts, using a curriculum developed through the leadership of Mike Young in collaboration with Ana Cossio. It was a powerful, full-circle moment—evidence that when we invest in people and walk together in service, we build something far greater than any one organization.
Through the faithful service of volunteers, the strength of community partnerships, and a mission rooted in love and service, Good Samaritan Clinic remains a beacon of light—bringing compassionate care and lasting hope to those who need it most.
