19th Annual Infant & Maternal Mortality Awareness Scholarship Luncheon

The South Carolina Office of Rural Health (SCORH)–Family Solutions team recently welcomed 248 community leaders, healthcare professionals, advocates, and supporters to the Orangeburg County Conference Center for the 19th Annual Infant & Maternal Mortality Awareness Scholarship Luncheon, an inspiring gathering centered on awareness, education, and action to improve maternal and infant health across South Carolina.
Throughout the luncheon, distinguished speakers brought powerful perspectives and important conversations to the forefront. Daiquan Smith, advocate and husband of the late Dr. Janell Green Smith, shared a deeply personal perspective on maternal health awareness and the importance of advocacy. Deborah DePaoli, Palmetto Engagement & Policy Director for the Institute for Child Success, highlighted how policy and community engagement drive meaningful change. Tameca Wilson, Director of Maternal and Infant Health with the March of Dimes, shared valuable insight into the maternal and infant health challenges communities face today, including disparities that continue to impact families across South Carolina.
Hosted by author and radio personality Beasy Baybie, the luncheon was more than an opportunity to raise awareness; it was a celebration of education, community, and the people working to create healthier futures for mothers and babies. The event also celebrated scholarship recipients, recognizing their educational journeys and the promise they hold for the future.
With a strong turnout, meaningful conversations, and a shared commitment to improving outcomes for South Carolina families, the 19th Annual Infant & Maternal Mortality Awareness Scholarship Luncheon was a powerful reminder that when communities come together, awareness can become action and hope can become change.
